United Technologies Corporation, a Fortune top 50 company is a dynamic global corporation operating at the leading edge of commercial and military aviation, aerospace systems, climate control, elevator design, security and fire protection as well as hydrogen fuel cell development.
The Ceramics group at United Technologies Research Center (UTRC) is seeking experienced engineers and scientists to work in the areas of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) and structural ceramics development and applications engineering. Focus areas will include SiC fiber reinforced SiC (SiC/SiC) and Si-N-C (SiC/Si-N-C) composites, carbon fiber reinforced SiC (C/SiC), silicon nitride, and silicon carbide structural ceramics. The ideal candidate would be experienced in ceramic composite processing methods (e.g. CVI, Melt Infiltration, PIP), fiber coating methods, processing and design of high temperature ceramic coatings, characterization and mechanical testing techniques, detailed microstructural analytical techniques, prototype evaluation using sub-element rig testing, component design, and/or modeling. The candidate will work with an experienced team of engineers and technicians to implement advanced ceramic materials (composites and monolithics) for applications within the products of United Technologies Corporation (UTC) business units.
An advanced degree and experience (M.S. with 5 years experience, Ph.D or Sc.D. with 2 yrs of experience) in either ceramic engineering, materials science and engineering, or similar field.
Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired:
- Processing methods for CMCs, monolithic structural ceramics, and high temperature coatings
- Analysis and working knowledge of fiber architecture and weaving of ceramic fibers
- Design of turbine and combustor components from CMC's and/or monolithic ceramics
- Application development for ceramic matrix composite or monolithic ceramic components
- Environmental durability of CMCs and ceramics, including the influence of fiber interface coatings and environmental barrier coatings (EBCs)
- Detailed analytical characterization of ceramic composite microstructures and correlation of microstructural features with mechanical performance and changes in performance
- Mechanical evaluation of ceramic components
- Structural analysis of CMC and/or monolithic ceramic components
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in an industrial research environment is preferred
- Experience with structural analysis methods
- The ability to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Solid technical writing, presentation and overall communication skills
- Experience with government contract R&D
- Program management experience
